Zelensky: Ukraine should get clear security guarantees while it is not in NATO

President of Ukraine Vodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukraine needs to receive clear security guarantees at the Vilnius NATO summit before joining the Alliance.

He said this in an interview with ABC News, Ukrinform reports.

“The Vilnius summit is very important. If there is no unity regarding the technical invitation for Ukraine to join the Alliance, it’s all a matter of pitical will just to find the prer wording and invite Ukraine. It would be an important message to say that NATO is not afraid of Russia. Ukraine should get clear security guarantees while it is not in NATO,” Zelensky said.

That is a very important point, he stressed.

“Only under these conditions, our meeting would be meaningful. Otherwise, it’s just another pitics,” Zelensky said.

The journalist said: “So it sounds unlikely that you will go,” and the President replied: “Why? I think we’ll do a lot of work”.

According to Zelensky, Ukraine is working with its partners on security guarantees and is helping its partners to make some conclusions for this upcoming NATO summit meeting, “and we would like to have all the decisions to be made during the summit”.

“In this case, it’s obvious that I’ll be there, and I’ll be doing whatever I can in order to, so to speak, expedite that sution to have an agreement with our partners. I don’t want to go to Vilnius for fun if the decision has been made beforehand,” Zelensky said.

As reported, President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda said he hes that President of Ukraine Vodymyr Zelensky will come to Vilnius, despite his warning that he sees no point in going unless Kyiv is given a "signal" at the meeting, and will play an important re in the decision making in Vilnius.
