Apple is preparing a major Siri update in iOS 27 that will allow you to use third-party AI services directly through the voice assistant. The company is aiming to catch up with competitors and make the iPhone a full-fledged platform for artificial intelligence.
Apple is planning to significantly change the way its voice assistant Siri works, opening it up to third-party AI services. This will be part of the iOS 27 update, which could be unveiled as early as June at the WWDC 2026 conference, Bloomberg reports.
How will Siri change after the update?
It's about creating a new integration system that will allow apps from the App Store to connect to Siri. As a result, users will be able to choose which AI service will handle their request.
Siri can already interact with ChatGPT today thanks to a partnership with OpenAI . However, in iOS 27, Apple plans to expand this approach and allow work with competing solutions such as Google Gemini from Google or Claude from Anthropic.
The new system, codenamed Extensions , will allow you to integrate AI agents from installed apps into Siri, as well as into the upcoming standalone Siri app and Apple Intelligence Platform features. In the settings, users will be able to determine which services are active and which are not.
This means that requests can be directed to different AIs directly from Siri, choosing the right service for each task . Previously, this required separately specifying the use of ChatGPT.
Importantly, the new approach differs from Apple's internal plans to use Gemini models to improve Siri itself. In this case , it's about interacting with individual apps , if they receive the appropriate support.
According to Reuters , this move also has a business purpose. Apple will be able to earn money from subscriptions to third-party AI services through the App Store , receiving a share of user payments. This will allow the company to expand its revenue from services without having to enter into separate agreements with each partner.
At the same time, opening Siri to third-party solutions means abandoning ChatGPT's exclusive role in the Apple ecosystem. There have already been discussions within the company about choosing a partner, and now Apple is betting on a more flexible model with multiple AIs.
The company is also working on other changes: a new Siri interface, a separate app, and deeper integration with Spotlight search. There will also be new access points, including the ” Ask Siri” and “Write with Siri” buttons.
Apple is expected to reveal more details during its June event, although some features may still change or be delayed.
